But it really should be 'build users first, then figure out a way to screw them'
Twitter's founders had an interesting comparison of their own company and Google. They wanted to follow in the same steps as Google by building up users first (creating value and a sustainable advantage) and then figuring out a way to monetize. Well what did Google do when they realized they were the best search? They introduced ads…and now so has Twitter. So why does Promoted Tweets screw Twitter users? Because Twitter will become the billion dollar company they want to be valued at and will lose focus of the value that got users on the site. They will be more focused on making sure they are making their investors happy than the 70% of users have a bad opinion of Promoted Tweets. And if I hear 'resonate' in another piece of marketing material to make it seem like you are making the service better, I am going to blow my brains out. Why don't you listen to the majority of your users resonating that they hate the idea? Don't get me wrong, I would screw users over too if I was them: they are looking at becoming (if not already) a major player in the ever shifting news business. But don't expect your users to accept it with open arms.
