APPLE now bigger than MICROSOFT?

Posted: May 26th, 2010 | Author: schindyguy | Filed under: Uncategorized | View Comments

Today, unless there is a huge change, Apple will surpass Microsoft in Market Cap which will probably be celebrated by Apple fanboys everywhere.

But does that mean that Apple products (and specifically computers which it competes with Microsoft over) will be the standard in the future like Microsoft/PC/Windows is today? I think the answer to that depends on if Apple can adjust and create more entry-level computers for the masses. There price points are simply to high right now.

They are obviously considering this, but it might have been a key to their success in the past—price skimming the elite. Now that they really do have more market share, it might be time to pivot into pricing for the masses. Of course that's assuming that market share on the stock market translates to computer market share (which it clearly does not).

FCC Making Moves Again to Prevent Phone “Bill Shock”

While I am definitely not a fan of FCC's censorship with ridiculous things like the Janet's nipple or Howard Stern, I think they are making good moves to protect consumers against "bill shock". You know when you get a cell phone bill and then just about collapse at the price they are charging you for roaming/international calling/data overages/etc… A model they are seriously considering would be adopted from Europe where carriers are required to text message you the rates you are being charged as you are placing the call…I think its a great idea when there is virtually no direct cost for them to send a text message.

The FCC is on the side of consumers? Pinch me, I must be dreaming

After reading all the news about the FCC's plan on net neutrality, I have come to conclusion that the FCC has finally made a good decision to protect consumers and attempt to bring competition to the market.
It could have huge implications on the future of the monopolistic ISP companies that currently control and throttle bandwidth of its customers. Some ISPs are throttling based on torrent traffic, but not all torrent traffic is illegal. The protocol is used for perfectly legal torrents all the time—although it looks like 'legal torrents' has changed their name to 'clearbits' to move away from the torrents-being-illegal stigma.
Reading through the Wall Street Journal's article on the subject, its so funny to read the Cable Company and ISP lobbyists bitch about incurring extra costs on their network if the FCC gets their way. Boo-hoo, its not like the ISPs wouldnt just pass those extra costs onto consumers…Then, we, as consumers, might be able to make a choice on which ISP we go with (instead of just having to deal with horrible customer service, downtime, slow innovation, high prices and a huge list of negative impacts that monopolies create for consumers).

WTF? HP Wants in on the Saturated Mobile Market?

Posted: April 28th, 2010 | Author: schindyguy | Filed under: Uncategorized | View Comments

HP's aquisition of Palm is clearly for their mobile OS market (and maybe some patents) but why would a company with little to no mobile phone experience jump in to an extremely competitive market like that? Its similar to how Yahoo was rumored to want to acquire Foursquare for the sake of saying to their investors that they are in the location space. Buying companies to keep investors happy does not seem like a good idea to me—And I think that's exactly what HP just did with Palm. Ironic that HP's tagline is Invent considering the situation. HP better invent a way to capitalize on a failing company, and quickly..

Did Google Kick Apple in the Nuts Over Flash?

Posted: April 28th, 2010 | Author: schindyguy | Filed under: Uncategorized | View Comments

So now that Android 2.2 will support Flash, it looks like Google has kicked Apple straight in the nuts.

I see it as Google wanting to make everything open for developers —- akin to Microsoft's success —- and Apple being the snob in the crowd that wants everyone to play nice with their OS. I can understand wanting to limit Flash because of hardware/battery issues, but somehow/someway Android based devices can do it…

I think this is a crucial time for Apple. Not being open enough and pissing off developers will inevitably lead to them losing steam in surpassing Microsoft's market cap.

Need an example how hypocritical, irrational, non-transparent and irritating they are? Look no further than their app approval process which has taken a new turn today by rejecting apps based on what they think is moral. Evidently you can't create apps that club seals, but you can create apps that kill police officers. To me, it seems like Apple values virtual baby seals more than police officers.

I propose they open everything up and allow hackers to create the best programs they can—just look at how innovative the jailbroken iPhone market is—and to take it one step further, let parental controls/ OS control restrictions and actual parenting be the kids moral compass, not you Apple. Maybe you wont get annoying parent groups attacking you for the iPhone's content that you are trying to be Big Brother on if you just give up on your moral crusade.

Apple, once you get up from Google's roshambo, maybe you will reconsider?
